The Mourn

The first sub theme of the trend Anti-Religion is the theme of mourning. When the world as we know it ends, religion will be over and millions of devoutly religious people will be left with no religious guidance. These people will then split into the 2 Anti-Religious categories, the first of which is Mourn.

Mourners of religion will abolish their religious culture and all religious connotations they had once subscribed too, yet they will still be in a state of disbelief and grief. These people will treat the death of their religion as they would the death of a person and funeral like apparel will be seen.

Feature One: Heavy Lace

The lace will be used in every which way possible, covering the face being a common feature so to hide any past association they had with religion and society. These black lace veils will help distort the wearers vision and therefore distort the way they see the world, this will help to reinforce the fact that the world is no longer how they know it. The lace material will also help enclose the wearer, segregating them from other society to be able to deal with their own mourning.

Feature Two: Velvet

The inclusion of velvet material to the trend will help juxtapose what the wearer used to be. Religion teaches people to live in a mentally rich way but to sacrifice material belonging. Velvet is a rich and sumptuous material that is associated with gothic culture and self indulgence; this connotation will separate the wearer further from their past lifestyle.

Feature Three: Black

Almost all clothing for the mourner will be black. Black is the primary colour representing death and morbidity. Religion often encourages the religious to wear colour, celebrating their life; this again opposes this idea and shows the disconnection of religion from the new world. Black will be featured in every sense, from clothing to make up. With the Innovators and early adopters of the trend there will also be an inclusion of dip dyed hair, with the ends being black compared to the fairer roots.

Origins

World War 3 will bring the end of the world as we know it. It would be no surprise if WW3 was actually created because of religious warfare. Religion is probably the most powerful thing in the entire world, religion can dictate peoples lives, how they live, how they dress and how they behave. WW3 and the end of the world introduces my smaller trend, Anti-Religion. I have predicted this as a trend because when the world has been destroyed and warped, most religion will die with it. Without getting too political and controversial, I'm pretty sure people will realise that there is not saviour, no independence day and no god...of any kind.

I personally believe that religion is a good thing, it can guide peoples lives and I really like the idea of a dedication to one thing. However, I also (understandably) believe that religion is a form of oppression. When religion is no more people will be free of their moral chains and finally be able to become individual.

The end of religion, bringing Anti-Religion, is not a hippy and nature loving movement. This trend is nothing about tie-dye, organic and green living. I predict that Anti-Religion will be released in a form of anarchy. People will have no boundaries, and after the destruction of their known world, they will have nothing set out for them to do.

Anti-Religion takes shape in a variety of ways. The most obvious of which is direct inversion. Inversion of the Christian Crucifix for example will represent the death of that following. All religious symbols will become distorted, inverted or morphed to represent what used to be. This Anti-Religion trend will also take form using harsh, sharp materials and dark colours. Shattering all that used to be, and using broken old forms of oppression to represent the new uncontrollable anarchy and freedom. This anarchy will also be represented by the ex-religious going into a state of mourning using materials like lace, bold and simple block colours in a minimalist fashion. But still including the shattered religious symbols and statements.

I also believe the Anti-Religion trend will bring more personal fashion. Tattoo's and piercings which are generally disapproved by religion will now become a focal point of self expression and rebellion against the past world.

The following posts on this page will explore the Anti-Religion cult trend in terms of fabric, colour and symbolism.
